Are we getting the best from Idle-Stop and Hybrid technology? A short article by Chris Ellis, Regional Manager, MAC GB Ltd

It seems to me that when I’m in a queue of vehicles, stationary at traffic lights, roundabouts or junctions, that the majority of vehicles ahead of me have their brake lights on.  This got me wondering, what are the benefits, after all the majority of drivers seem to be doing it.

Well, it could be that vehicle is an automatic.  So what you may ask?  Well, whilst in ‘D’ (Drive) with the footbrake applied the vehicle doesn’t go anywhere, until such time as the driver releases the footbrake and away we go.  Is that a benefit?  I suppose so, but what about the driver behind who has to stare at the brake lights and the high level high intensity LED brake light placed at eye level – debilitating!  Does the Idle-Stop technology work, I think not.  So no savings on fuel, a tired driver and the one following now has a migraine!

So why do drivers of manual cars do it?  Well, perhaps they can be quicker away at the lights or junction, perhaps it’s less time consuming or, were they taught it.  I would suggest that because the right foot is on the brake pedal it can’t be quicker and neither does it save any time.  I would agree that drivers are now taught the procedure, but the caveat is, only for as long as is necessary.  How long is that?  Again I would suggest, ‘momentarily’, if you can’t go, get the parking brake on, select neutral and sit back and relax.  Now your Idle-Stop system comes into it’s own.

All automotive manufacturers are now producing cars with Idle-Stop, Hybrid technology and full electric power.  The former, if used correctly gives substantial improvement in fuel consumption.  But in my experience, drivers of these vehicles have not changed their driving habits and so the advantages are minimal.

Fleet managers must appreciate the need to change their driver’s attitude and behaviour toward this technology.  It is here to stay, more and more vehicles will be equipped with it so it’s reasonable to assume that the Fleet market will adopt it sooner or later.

It is possible to make fuel savings with ’standard’ vehicles by having a robust Road Risk Policy and getting drivers trained (not assessed).  Do this with the latest technology and encourage drivers to adopt it and use it properly has huge advantages.  Of course, continuous monitoring is essential with rewards offered to those achieving the best returns.

MAC GB Ltd can offer specialist courses in the driving of Hybrids and those equipped with Idle-Stop.
