New Appointment

MAC confirms its position at the forefront of high quality Driver Training with the appointment of another exceptionally well qualified Consultant with an outstanding record of achievement and experience in all aspects of post test driver training and assessment.

MAC are delighted to welcome Jeff Pickering to its Management team.

Jeff was Deputy Chief Driving Examiner with the Driving Standards Agency before his retirement in March of this year and he brings a wealth of relevant experience and knowledge to complement the impressive expertise for which MAC is renowned.

He started his career as a Police Constable in West Yorkshire Police but left, becoming a Driving Examiner in September 1978. During his career with the Driving Standards Agency Jeff conducted all forms of licence acquisition test (including car, motorcycle, LGV, PCV tracked vehicles, tractor etc).

He also conducted examinations for initial and continued qualification of Approved Driving Instructors as well as Instructors on a number of DSA Voluntary Registers. Jeff progressed through the staff grades until he was appointed Assistant Chief Driving Examiner and finally Deputy Chief Driving Examiner.

In recent years Jeff specialised in Post Test Driver Training and Standards, a role which saw him working very closely with Police, Fire and Ambulance Authorities and the Ministry of Defence where he advised on Driver Training and Testing issues and the development of a number of Training Manuals. He also worked very closely with the organisations which offer Advanced Driver Training.

His achievements and experience include:

  • Played an instrumental role in the development and implementation of the Voluntary Register of Large Goods Vehicle Driving Instructors.
  • Played an instrumental role in the development and implementation of the Voluntary Register of Fleet Driving Instructors.
  • Worked extensively with European colleagues, as part of a working group managed by CIECA (Commision Internationale des Examens de Conduit Automobile), to consider harmonisation of LGV and PCV tests.
  • Helped to develop an agreed definition of ‘Advanced Driving’ and participated in the supervision and the delivery of ‘Advanced Driving Tests’.
  • Worked in Algeria and Mauritania assessing the provision of ‘Post Test’ driver training to foreign nationals and British ex-pats.
  • Trained in Sweden as an ‘Eco’ driving instructor.
  • Developed the DSA strategy on ‘Eco-safe Driving’ including the fitting to some vehicles of ‘Econen’ meters.
  • Conducted trials of different driving techniques to ensure that DSA were at the forefront of safe environmental and economical driving issues.
  • Developed close working links with Ministry of Defence colleagues and negotiated a Memorandum of Understanding between MoD and DSA which introduced of a supervisory regime for Defence Driving Examiners.
