New laws for killer drivers

January 11, 2008

A new charge has been put in place for motorists who cause death by careless driving. It will apply in England, Wales and Scotland and will carry a maximum five-year sentence.

However some motorists found guilty of causing death could avoid jail as the Sentencing Guidelines Council is recommending community penalties in cases where drivers kill someone thought “momentary inattention”.

Some people have the view that anybody who kills due to carelessness or otherwise should serve a prison sentence. The SGC do not agree and its consultation paper said: “Where the level of carelessness is low and there are no aggravating factors, even the fact that death was caused is not sufficient to justify a prison sentence.”

These laws just indicate the importance of giving driving your full attention especially with the increasing in car distractions of mobile phones and satellite navigation systems.
